Ginkgo Biloba Multiple trials have studied the medicinal properties of ginkgo, the seeds were found to contain fatty acids, bioflavones and minerals. The leaves were found to contain lactones, sitosterol, glycosides, and anthocyanins. Ginkgo interferes with the action of a platelet activating factor, it makes platelets less sticky, prevents clumping, and is therefore of considerable benefit for those with vascular problems. Because Ginkgo has the ability to make the platelets less sticky, it increases blood flow, and so has been of proven benefit to elderly people, preventing stroke and dementia.
The increase of blood flow to the brain aids memory, and prevents heart attack. Studies have found Ginkgo is of benefit to those who have cochlear deafness. Because Ginkgo generally increases blood flow, it relieves cochlear deafness, which researchers believe, results from decreased blood flow to the auditory nerve. " A 13 month study of 103 chronic tinnitus sufferers done in Paris showed Ginkgo " conclusively effective". Gingko improved all the patients taking the herb".Ref: The Healing Herbs, Michael Castleman.
Ginkgo's ability to increase peripheral circulation proves to be a tonic to the capillaries, strengthening them and making them more flexible.Ginkgo has been shown to protect the nervous system and fight oxidation, it treats impotence, inner ear dysfunction such as tinnitus with vertigo and dizziness. The Chinese have been using this herb for thousands of years, to successfully treat numerous ailments. However, you may read results of various medical trials, which deny the efficacy of this herb to treat tinnitus.
You have to make up your own mind about natural remedies, just remind yourself, that if the medicos don't know what causes tinnitus, nor how to stop it, then you well ask yourself if they are entitiled to opinate about herbs, of which they know nothing at all. Because Ginkgo interferes with platelet activating factor, it is most important for those taking blood thinning medication, such as Warfarin, that they do not take Ginkgo Biloba. It has to be either one or the other, not both. This also applies to those elderly people taking aspirin on a daily basis to prevent strokes, again, it's either one or the other not both. This herbs is safe to take, if you are not pregnant, not breast feeding, and do not take blood thinning medication. Some people have reported irritability, restlessness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting from taking large amounts of this herb. This is a reference to a study which failed to prove the efficacy of Ginkgo for treating tinnitus.
