What is a Glomus tumor?

Glomus tumors or paraganglioma, are highly vascular benign tumors, which although locally aggressive, do not usually metastasize. The glomus tympanum originates in the middle ear, and is clinically evident in a routine examination of the ear, it appears as a red mass. If the glomus tumor is touching the under surface of the intact ear drum, a unilateral pulsatile tinnitus results.

Glomus juglare lies in the adventitia of the internal jugular vein at the bony base of the skull, just below the bony floor of the middle ear. It frequently erodes into the middle ear, forming a red nodular mass and causing conduction deafness. When large it causes bulging under, and  through the tympanic membrane, into the external auditor meatus.These tumors may not become clinically apparent until symptoms such as ringing in the ear,  bleeding from the ear, and compression of nearby cranial nerves may result in facial weakness, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness and shoulder drooping. In rare cases these tumors may produce the hormone norepinephrine, which may cause headaches, anxiety, high blood pressure and increased heart rate.Other related symptoms include headache, perspiration, pallor, and nausea

Treatment depends on the tumor's size, as well as the patient's general medical condition. Argon lasers may be used to remove a small tumor, however, if the tumor is large then the operation becomes more extensive, and there is increased likelihood of further loss of hearing, and damage to facial nerves.
